Title:
Investigating the Relationship Between University Students’ Social Media Use and Psychological Resilience
Ali ŞİMŞEK, Mehmet ÇEVİK
Marmara University, Istanbul Technical University
Introduction / Purpose:
Today’s youth intensively use social media platforms due to rapid technological advancements. This usage can have either positive or negative impacts on their psychological well-being. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between university students' social media usage patterns and their levels of psychological resilience.
Method:
This is a quantitative study based on a correlational research design. Data were collected from 412 undergraduate students from three public universities in Istanbul during the Spring semester of the 2024–2025 academic year. The Social Media Usage Scale and the Psychological Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using correlation and multiple regression techniques.
Findings:
A significant negative correlation was found between the frequency of social media use and psychological resilience. Students with high social comparison tendencies had lower resilience scores. Conversely, those who used social media for acquiring information and social support had higher levels of psychological resilience.
Conclusion / Discussion:
The findings indicate that the way young individuals engage with social media significantly affects their psychological resilience. These results suggest that university-level counseling services should take students’ digital habits into account. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of intervention programs aimed at enhancing digital literacy and media awareness.
Keywords:
social media use, psychological resilience, youth, university students, digital habits
